This collection includes slate and sheesham wood sets from Just Slate Company, Scottish oak coasters from Scottish Made and cork coasters in Black Watch tartan from Glen Appin of Scotland. Many motifs also appear on whisky stones and hip flasks, so you can easily put together a matching gift.

How do you look after slate coasters?

Wipe slate coasters with a damp cloth and do not use chemical cleaning products. Over time slate can look a little greyish or blotchy; a few drops of olive oil on a cloth restore the stone's deep black colour. Let the coasters dry briefly before putting a glass on them. That way the engravings by Just Slate Company stay clearly visible for years.

What is the difference between slate and oak coasters?

Slate is heavy, cool and sleek, with hand-cut edges and a foam backing; oak looks warmer and feels lighter. Slate is a natural stone that can take a knock and is cleaned with a damp cloth. Oak from Scottish Made is finished with natural oil, has a different grain on each coaster and does not tolerate standing water or the dishwasher. So choose based on look and use.

Do slate coasters scratch your table?

No, the slate coasters from Just Slate Company have a foam backing underneath that protects your tabletop. It is needed, because the edges of the slate are cut by hand and are therefore deliberately rough and natural. Preferably lift the coasters rather than sliding them across a delicate tabletop. That way both the foam backing and your table stay in good condition.

Why do Scottish coasters feature thistles, red deer and Highland cows?

They are recognisable symbols of Scotland. The thistle is the country's national emblem, the red deer stands for the rugged Scottish Highlands and the Highland cow with its long coat is perhaps the best-known animal of the Scottish countryside. For a whisky lover they are a subtle nod to the home of single malt, which is why they are popular as gifts.

What is Black Watch tartan?

Black Watch is a dark tartan in blue, green and black, named after the historic Scottish Highland regiment The Black Watch. The pattern is also known as Government tartan and is one of the best-known Scottish tartans. Glen Appin of Scotland uses it for a set of six cork coasters: light, unbreakable and a calm, classic choice next to a whisky glass.

A round piece of slate under your glass: a small detail that protects your table while bringing something natural and calm into your home.
