From marketer to whisky maker: the story of Compass Box
Compass Box has no distillery, no stills, and no grain stock of its own. What the brand does have: a former Diageo marketer with a mission to make blended Scotch exciting again. This is the story of how John Glaser built one of the most respected whisky blenders in the world from a small office in London.

A marketer who had had enough of boring blends
John Glaser worked for years as a marketer at Johnnie Walker, then part of Diageo, when he concluded that blended Scotch whisky had lost its luster: too many brands relied on tradition and too little on taste or creativity. In 2000, he founded Compass Box, based on the premise that a blend could be just as refined and exciting as a single malt — provided you craft the whiskies yourself with precision and boldness.
A blending room in London, not a distillery
Compass Box does not distill anything itself. The company sources malt and grain whisky from various Scottish distilleries and adds its signature in its own "Blending Room" in London: carefully considered proportions, experimental cask maturation in toasted new French oak, among others, and a blend that, as a whole, is greater than the sum of its parts. Because Scottish law stipulates that whisky named "Scotch" must mature in Scotland, that practical aspect takes place in Scottish storage facilities — however, the creative heart of Compass Box beats in London.
Recognition within the whisky world
The approach paid off: Compass Box grew into one of the most awarded and talked-about blenders of Scotch whisky, and John Glaser was inducted into the Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame in 2020. He retired in 2024; whisky making has since been in the hands of James Saxon, who started as a whisky maker in 2019 and became whiskymaking director in 2024 — Glaser remains involved as a shareholder and advocate for the brand.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Compass Box have its own distillery?
No. Compass Box is an independent whisky blender: the company sources malt and grain whisky from Scottish distilleries and blends and ages it further itself, without distilling.
Why is Compass Box based in London instead of Scotland?
Founder John Glaser deliberately chose London as his creative home base. Because whisky called "Scotch" is legally required to mature in Scotland, the practical part takes place there — the blends themselves are conceived in the London Blending Room.
Who leads Compass Box today?
James Saxon has been Whiskymaking Director since 2024. Founder John Glaser, who led the company for nearly 25 years, remains involved as a shareholder.
What makes Compass Box's approach special?
A strong emphasis on taste over tradition: well-considered blend ratios, experimental cask aging and — unusual for the industry — a high degree of openness about how the whiskies are composed.
