More about [title]
Glencairn Crystal makes, among others, the Iona, Skye and Pot Still decanters and the 1250 ml Bothwell ship's decanter in a wooden box. Cumbria Crystal hand-blows its decanters in England from 24% lead crystal. Final Touch and Bar Originale contribute eye-catching models such as a rotating decanter, a globe and a ship in a bottle. If you are looking for a jug for water with your whisky, take a look at the water jugs.
Can you store whisky in a crystal decanter for a long time?
In a glass or lead-free crystal decanter you can keep whisky for several weeks to months, provided the stopper seals well. Lead crystal is better for serving than for long-term storage: research shows that lead can leach into spirits over time. With a lead crystal decanter, only pour in what you will drink within a few days and keep the rest in the bottle.
What is the difference between lead crystal and lead-free crystal?
Lead crystal contains lead oxide, which makes the glass heavier, more brilliant and easier to cut; lead-free crystal uses other minerals and is lighter and often dishwasher-safe. The decanters from Cumbria Crystal are made of 24% lead crystal, and the Skye and Bothwell decanters from Glencairn are also lead crystal. The Glencairn Iona decanter and the Japanese-style and rotating decanters from Final Touch are lead-free crystal.
Does a decanter make whisky taste better?
No, unlike wine, whisky barely changes in flavour in a glass decanter; a decanter is mainly about presentation and ease of pouring. Whisky only matures in wood, not in glass. The Porthole Decanter is the exception: it is made of charred American oak with glass windows, giving your whisky subtle oak notes, like a short finish in miniature.
How do you clean a crystal whisky decanter?
Rinse a crystal whisky decanter with lukewarm water and dry it carefully; lead crystal does not belong in the dishwasher. Preferably use no or very little mild washing-up liquid and rinse well so that no smell remains. Let the decanter dry open and upside down on a soft cloth. Rinse the oak Porthole Decanter with lukewarm water only, without soap.
What size whisky decanter do you need?
If you want to decant a whole bottle, choose a decanter of at least 700 to 750 ml. The Glencairn Iona, Skye and Pot Still decanters hold a complete bottle. The 850 and 1000 ml decanters from Cumbria Crystal leave room to spare, and the 1250 ml Bothwell is a true showpiece. A smaller decanter, such as the 400 ml racing car, is handy for half a bottle.
