Why I chose this

What happens when briny Hebridean whisky goes into full oloroso casks? Exactly what I had hoped for: dried fruit and clove, with seaweed and salt running right through. And the fact that a large share of the profits goes back to the community on Harris completes the story for me.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 'first fill' mean for these oloroso sherry casks?

First fill means the cask is filled with whisky for the first time after holding sherry. Such a cask still contains a great deal of sherry influence and releases it generously. In this Hearach, that brings dried fruit, clove and sherry richness, while the briny minerality of the Isle of Harris style still shines through.

Why is Isle of Harris called 'the social distillery'?

Because the distillery in Tarbert reinvests a large share of its profits in the local community on Harris, an island in the Outer Hebrides off Scotland's west coast. With a bottle such as this First Fill Oloroso, you are therefore also contributing to the community the whisky comes from.

Should you drink this First Fill Oloroso neat or with water?

Neat is a fine place to start: at 46% ABV it drinks well without water. Then try it with a few drops of water; the briny minerality and seaweed often become clearer, while the sherry notes soften. We are less keen on ice, as the cold mutes the clove and dried fruit.
