Silkie

Silkie The Midnight Silkie Irish Single Malt

Where the Legendary and Dark Silkie are blends, The Midnight Silkie is a fully fledged Irish single malt — darker and spicier, with a name that refers to the night-time Donegal coast where the legend of the silkies comes from.

Why I chose this

The Midnight is the Silkie I reach for when someone finds Irish whiskey a bit tame. As the only single malt in the range, it has more spice and a drier finish. I like to pour it late in the evening, with a piece of dark chocolate on the side.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes The Midnight Silkie different from the other Silkie bottles?

It is the only single malt in the range: The Legendary and The Dark Silkie are blends of malt and grain whiskey. The Midnight matures in sherry casks, is 46% ABV and is darker and spicier, with a slightly bitter, drying finish. That is why it sits in Spicy & Lively on our Flavour Compass.

What does Irish single malt mean?

An Irish whiskey made entirely from malted barley at a single distillery. Like all Irish whiskey, it must mature for at least three years in wooden casks in Ireland. A blend such as The Legendary Silkie, by contrast, combines malt and grain whiskey.

Should you drink The Midnight Silkie with or without water?

Start without: taste it neat at room temperature to get to know the spice and dried fruit. Then add a few drops of water if you like; at 46% ABV that often opens up extra aroma. I would go easy on ice, as cold dulls exactly the spiciness that makes this whiskey its own.
