Why I chose this

'Paint It Brack' made me smile straight away, but it was what is inside that won me over. A young Royal Brackla from two first-fill oloroso casks, at 55% ABV, lively and full of energy. I pour it for anyone who thinks young whisky has to be dull.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean that Royal Brackla held a Royal Warrant?

A Royal Warrant is official recognition as a supplier to the British royal household. Royal Brackla was the first whisky to receive this status, hence the 'Royal' in its name. Even so, it has remained an underrated Highland distillery that you rarely see as an independent bottling.

Isn't an eight-year-old whisky at 55% ABV too fierce?

Neat it is powerful, but with water it becomes approachable. The 55% ABV mainly means you decide how strong you drink it: add water in small steps until the balance feels right. The profile stays fresh and fruity; on our Flavour Compass it sits in Smooth & Fruity.

What are first-fill oloroso hogsheads?

Hogsheads are casks of around 250 litres. First fill means they were filled with whisky for the first time after holding oloroso sherry, so the sherry influence is at its strongest. This release combines two such casks, bringing red fruit, orange peel and nuts.
