Tasting glasses

Whisky tasting glasses are small glasses that let you nose and taste several whiskies side by side without pouring large measures. They are made for tastings at home, at a whisky club or when you want to compare a new bottle with a familiar favourite. Here you will find the Glencairn WEE glass, our own Whisky Taster and the Flight Tasting set from Final Touch.

More about [title]

The WEE glass is a small version of the Glencairn glass with a capacity of 70 ml; wee is Scots for small. The 100 ml Whisky Taster has a tulip-shaped bowl and a 4.4 cm opening and is available in gift packaging and as a good-value trade pack, with or without a logo. Engraved tasting glasses with a motif can be found among the engraved glasses; to find out what a flight is, see the M4W Whisky Glossary.

How big should a whisky tasting glass be?

Big enough to swirl, small enough that a small measure does not get lost. For tastings, 70 to 100 ml works well, such as the Glencairn WEE glass and our Whisky Taster; with 1.5 to 2 cl inside, the bowl holds the aromas nicely. If you also want room for a normal dram, choose a larger tasting glass, such as the 195 ml glasses from the Final Touch Flight Tasting set.

How many whiskies should you taste in an evening, and how much do you pour per glass?

Four to six whiskies is enough for most tastings; after that your nose and palate tire. Pour about 1.5 to 2 cl per whisky so everyone can taste without drinking too much. Put out water to drink in between and to add a few drops to the whisky. Give everyone a separate glass for each whisky, so you can go back later to compare.

How do you put together a flight with the M4W Flavour Compass?

Choose one whisky from each style and taste from light to powerful: start with Smooth & Fruity, move through Rich & Sweet and Spicy & Lively and finish with Smoky & Powerful. That way a smoky whisky does not overwhelm the more delicate ones. With the three glasses of the Flight Tasting set or four Whisky Tasters side by side, you taste the difference straight away. Read more about the styles in the M4W Flavour Compass.

What is a Glencairn WEE glass?

The WEE glass is the small version of the Glencairn whisky glass, with a capacity of 70 ml and a height of 85 mm; wee is Scots for small. It is made of lead-free crystal and intended for small tasting measures. The glass is dishwasher-safe, although we recommend washing it by hand. You can buy it on its own or in gift packaging.

How do you stop glasses getting mixed up during a tasting?

Set the glasses out in a fixed order, from left to right in the order in which you taste. A holder like the one in the Flight Tasting set or a glass holder helps with this. You can also use glasses that differ from one another, such as engraved tasting glasses, each with its own motif. If you are tasting blind, the coloured Blind Tasting glasses among the special glasses are handy.
