Shakers & cocktail equipment
With a good cocktail shaker you can make whisky cocktails such as a whisky sour or a Gold Rush at home. In this collection you will find the Yarai cocktail shaker by Final Touch, with a hand-cut Japanese pattern and built-in strainer, and the classic glass shaker set by Bar Originale with jigger, bar spoon and pourer. Both suit the beginner home bartender and look good enough to leave out on the bar.

The Yarai shaker has a 650 ml glass tumbler with a steel lid; the cut pattern gives grip when the glass gets cold and wet. The Bar Originale shaker (600 ml) has six recipes and measuring lines on the glass, handy if you do not yet know the ratios by heart. Looking for the matching glass? See the cocktail glasses; recipes are in cocktail books.
Which cocktail shaker is best for beginners?
A three-piece shaker with a built-in strainer, also called a cobbler shaker, is the easiest for beginners, as you do not need a separate strainer. The Yarai shaker by Final Touch has such a lid with strainer and cap. The Bar Originale set is especially easy thanks to the recipes and measuring lines on the glass and the included 25/50 ml jigger, so you measure correctly from the start.
What is the difference between a Boston shaker and a cobbler shaker?
A Boston shaker has two parts, usually two tins or a tin and a glass, and needs a separate strainer. A cobbler shaker has three parts: tumbler, lid with strainer and cap. Many professional bartenders use a Boston shaker because it is fast and robust; at home a cobbler is often simpler. The shakers in this collection have a glass tumbler, so you can see what you are mixing.
Should you shake or stir a whisky cocktail?
Shake cocktails containing citrus juice, syrup or egg white, such as a whisky sour; stir cocktails made only of spirits, vermouth and bitters, such as a Manhattan or Old Fashioned. Shaking mixes and aerates vigorously, making the drink cloudier and frothier. Stirring chills and dilutes more gently, so the cocktail stays clear and silky. For stirring you use a bar spoon, like the one in the Bar Originale set.
How long should you shake a cocktail?
About 10 to 15 seconds of vigorous shaking with plenty of ice is usually enough; the outside of the shaker will then feel ice-cold. Fill the shaker generously with ice, as a small amount melts faster and waters down the cocktail. For cocktails with egg white, shake first without ice (dry shake) and then again with ice. With a glass shaker, hold the lid and tumbler firmly.
How do you clean a glass cocktail shaker?
Rinse the shaker straight after use so sugar and citrus do not dry on, then wash it with warm water and a little washing-up liquid. Clean the strainer in the lid with a soft brush. For the Yarai shaker with its hand-cut pattern and the Bar Originale shaker with printed recipes, hand washing is the safest choice. Dry everything thoroughly before putting the lid back on.
