Tomatin

Tomatin Italian Collection Marsala Edition

The third in Tomatin's Italian Collection: finished in casks of Marsala, the fortified dessert wine from Sicily. The result is the sweetest and most approachable of the trio — nuts, caramel and dried fruit.

Why I chose this

If someone is unsure whether a wine-cask finish is for them, I let them taste the Marsala Edition first. It is the sweetest and most approachable of Tomatin's Italian series, a whisky to pour with dessert instead of a glass of dessert wine. The Amarone and the Barolo can follow afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Marsala?

Marsala is a fortified dessert wine from Sicily. After maturing this Highland single malt in ex-bourbon casks, Tomatin finishes it in casks that previously held Marsala. That brings notes of nuts, caramel and dried fruit, making this the sweetest bottle in the Italian Collection.

Is the Marsala Edition a good first whisky with a wine-cask finish?

Yes, of the three Italian Tomatins this is the sweetest and most approachable. The wine influence is clearly present but without firm tannin. At 46% ABV you can add a few drops of water if you would like it softer. If you enjoy it, try the deeper Amarone or the stately Barolo next.

Which dessert goes with the Marsala Edition?

Desserts with nuts and caramel, such as almond biscuits or crème caramel, work best. Dried apricots also suit the sweet, nutty finish. Pour a small measure neat at room temperature, so the whisky supports the dessert rather than drowning it out.
