Why I chose this

The Peat Monster has been in the cabinets of many smoke lovers since 2003, and I understand why. Compass Box sets Islay smoke alongside the minerality of Highland malts, so the smoke never becomes one-dimensional. I pour it with smoked salmon, or after a winter walk along the coast.

Frequently Asked Questions

How smoky is The Peat Monster compared with an Islay single malt?

Clearly smoky, with peat smoke, sea salt and pepper, but more balanced than many heavy Islay malts. That is because Compass Box combines the Islay whisky with Highland malts that add minerality and citrus. If you are used to bold smoke, it will feel familiar; if you are new to peat, it is an approachable first step.

Which glass is best for The Peat Monster?

A tulip-shaped tasting glass. The narrow rim concentrates the aromas, so beneath the peat smoke you also pick up the citrus and sea salt. In a wide tumbler that finesse dissipates more quickly and the smoke dominates. Keep your nose at a little distance for the first sniff, as at 46% ABV the smoke is immediately present.

Does The Peat Monster go with food?

Yes, especially with briny and smoked dishes. Smoked salmon and oysters echo the peat smoke and maritime notes. For dessert, dark chocolate with sea salt works well: the salt heightens the smoke and the chocolate softens the drying finish. Pour a small measure so the whisky complements the food rather than overpowering it.
