Penderyn

Penderyn Gold Range Rich Oak

Rich Oak matures in ex-bourbon casks and is then finished in rejuvenated European ex-wine casks for extra oak depth: a fuller side of Penderyn's Gold Range, with more focus on vanilla and toffee.

Why I chose this

The Rich Oak is the Penderyn for lovers of vanilla and wood. Rejuvenated wine casks give it a fuller, warmer side than you might expect from Wales. I like to pour it with coffee, with something sweet on the side.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are rejuvenated wine casks?

Used European wine casks that have been reworked to make the wood active again, usually by scraping the inside and re-toasting or re-charring it. The cask then gives off plenty of flavour once more. In the Rich Oak they add extra depth of oak after the ex-bourbon maturation.

Which dessert goes with the Penderyn Rich Oak?

Desserts with caramel, vanilla or cinnamon. Crème caramel or a cinnamon bun pair nicely with the toffee and oak notes; a mild cheese is a less sweet option. Pour a small measure neat so the whisky and dessert enhance each other.

Should you add water to the Penderyn Rich Oak?

There is no need, but you can. Taste it neat first: at 46% ABV it is full but not sharp. A few drops of water then often open up the vanilla and gentle wood spice. I would leave out the ice, as cold dulls the rich oak notes.
