Penderyn

Penderyn Gold Range Sherrywood

Sherrywood is the fuller, sherry-led bottling in Penderyn's Gold Range: a deeper amber, with dried fruit and a spicy, woody depth that nicely balances the light Welsh spirit style.

Why I chose this

The Sherrywood shows a side of Penderyn that many people do not expect: deeper in colour, with dried fruit and spice. I pour it in the winter months, when the lighter Madeira can step aside for a while. A lovely bridge for anyone who enjoys sherry-matured Scotch malts and fancies looking across the border.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which casks does the Penderyn Sherrywood mature in?

In ex-bourbon casks and ex-oloroso sherry casks. The sherry casks give the whisky its deeper amber colour and notes of raisin, orange peel and clove, while the bourbon casks provide softness. The result is a fuller Penderyn that sits in Rich & Sweet on our Flavour Compass.

What is oloroso?

Oloroso is a dark, dry sherry from southern Spain that matures in contact with air. Casks that have held oloroso give whisky notes of dried fruit, nuts and spice. In the Penderyn Sherrywood they balance the light Welsh spirit beautifully.

How does the Sherrywood differ from the Penderyn Rich Oak?

Both come from the Gold Range, are 46% ABV and sit in Rich & Sweet, but the wood differs. The Sherrywood is all about oloroso sherry: dried fruit, nuts and spice. The Rich Oak is finished in rejuvenated European ex-wine casks and leans more towards vanilla, toffee and oak.
