For anyone looking for an approachable, smooth Irish whiskey with a strong story about the Donegal coast and the Celtic myths of the seal folk.
The Legendary Silkie is my answer when someone wants a bottle for a birthday party where far from everyone drinks whisky. It is round and friendly, and I always tell the story of the selkies of the Donegal coast along with it. That way the first glass becomes a conversation straight away.
The selkies: the seal women of Celtic mythology who, according to legend, lived along the rugged coast of Donegal. The brand comes from Sliabh Liag Distillers in that same corner of north-west Ireland. The Legendary Silkie is the soft, approachable core bottle of the range.
The Legendary Silkie matures in ex-bourbon casks and, at 40% ABV, is light, round and honey-sweet. The Dark Silkie matures in sherry casks, is 46% ABV and is darker and fuller, with dried fruit and spice. Both are blended Irish whiskeys with no age statement and sit in Rich & Sweet on our Flavour Compass.
Yes, that works well. At 40% ABV and with a soft, round flavour, it stays pleasant with an ice cube, ideal on a warm evening. Neat in a tulip glass you will smell more of the honey and apple, so do try it without ice first.
