Tomatin

Tomatin 12 YO Sherry Cask

Tomatin is one of the largest yet least-known Highland distilleries — once the biggest in Scotland, in Japanese hands since 1986 and valued for its smooth, approachable style. This 12 Year Old is matured entirely in sherry casks: rounded, spicy and full of red fruit.

Why I chose this

I sometimes call Tomatin the quiet force of the Highlands: large, yet unknown to many people. I bring out this 12 YO from sherry casks when someone wants a rounded whisky without sharp edges, for instance with coffee after a Sunday lunch. A bottle you can pour without any explanation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean that this Tomatin 12 YO matures entirely in sherry casks?

That the whisky spent its whole twelve years of maturation in casks that previously held sherry, rather than receiving only a short finish. As a result the sherry influence runs deep: red fruit, orange peel, dried fruit and nuts. On our Flavour Compass it sits in Rich & Sweet.

Why is Tomatin less well known than other Highland distilleries?

Mainly because the brand long stayed under the radar, not because of its quality. Tomatin was once the largest distillery in Scotland and has been Japanese-owned since 1986. Its whiskies are known for a soft, approachable style, which makes them all the more interesting if you are looking for an affordable Highland malt.

Isn't 40% ABV on the low side for a 12-year-old single malt?

No, 40% ABV is the legal minimum for whisky and common for many core bottlings. It makes this Tomatin soft and easy to drink; there is no need to add water. If you want more intensity, the Tomatin 14 YO Port Wood and the 18 YO in our range are bottled at 46% ABV.
