Tomatin

Tomatin Italian Collection Amarone Edition

With the Italian Collection, Tomatin brings together three Highland malts finished in casks from renowned Italian wine houses. The Amarone Edition is finished in casks that previously held Amarone della Valpolicella, the rich wine made from dried grapes — making for a deep, velvety finish.

Why I chose this

Of the three Italian Tomatins, the Amarone is the bottle I reach for when the evening is allowed to run late. Amarone is a wine made from dried grapes, and you taste that depth again without the whisky becoming heavy. I like to set it next to a cheeseboard with blue cheese.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Amarone and what does that cask bring to this whisky?

Amarone della Valpolicella is a rich Italian red wine made from dried grapes. After maturing in ex-bourbon casks, this Tomatin is finished in casks that previously held Amarone. That adds a deep, velvety layer of dark fruit and chocolate, with a light tannin on the finish.

How do the three bottles in Tomatin's Italian Collection differ?

They differ in the wine of the finishing cask. The Amarone Edition is the deepest and most velvety, the Barolo Edition the most stately with the firmest tannin, and the Marsala Edition the sweetest and most approachable. All three are Highland single malts at 46% ABV, not chill-filtered and with no colouring.

Does the Amarone Edition suit a cheeseboard?

Yes, especially with blue cheese. Gorgonzola and this whisky complement each other beautifully: the salt and creaminess of the cheese against the dark fruit and wine notes. Dark chocolate or dried cherries also work well. Serve the whisky neat, at room temperature.
