Since when has whisky been made in England again?

England had whisky distilleries in the nineteenth century, but production disappeared at the beginning of the twentieth century. In 2006, the Nelstrop family opened the first distillery in Roudham, Norfolk, to produce English single malt again in about a hundred years; the whiskies are released under the name The English Whisky Co. Since then, dozens of whisky distilleries have been added throughout England.

Is English whisky a protected name?

Yes, recently. On October 1, 2026, English whisky was registered in the United Kingdom as a geographical indication. To qualify, English whisky must be distilled in England and mature in wooden casks in England for at least three years, using grain from the United Kingdom and English water. Additional requirements apply to English single malt, such as English barley and production at a single distillery. An appeal has been lodged against the registration.

What is the difference between whisky liqueur and whisky?

Whisky consists of grain, water, and yeast, optionally caramel-colored, and must not be sweetened. A whisky liqueur is whisky to which sugar and flavorings have been added and which is bottled at a lower alcohol percentage. Tinner Bros liqueurs have 22% alcohol and combine bourbon with flavors such as blood orange, wild cherry, toffee, and hazelnut or spiced honey. They are sweeter and smoother than whisky and very different in use.

How do you drink Tinner Bros whiskey liqueurs?

Pure on ice is the simplest way: the cold keeps the sweetness fresh. Toffee Nut and Black Spiced are delicious in hot chocolate or coffee, or over vanilla ice cream as a dessert. Blood Orange and Wild Cherry work well in cocktails or topped up with tonic or sparkling water. Serve chilled and store an opened bottle upright in a cool, dark place.

How does English whisky differ from Scotch whisky?

The basic rules are similar: English whisky, too, must mature in wooden casks for at least three years and be bottled at a minimum of 40% alcohol. The difference lies mainly in tradition and freedom. English makers are less bound by fixed styles and enjoy experimenting with triple distillation, special wine casks, and other grain varieties. You can see this in this collection: a whisky aged in Portuguese Cabernet Sauvignon casks alongside a peated, triple-distilled whisky at cask strength.
