The English Whisky Co. (St. George's Distillery in Norfolk) was, in 2006, the first English whisky distillery in more than a hundred years — a pioneering story in its own right. This Red Range Cask Strength Smoked, triple distilled, is a distinctly intense bottling: bottled undiluted at cask strength, with a hefty layer of peat smoke.
Our Flavor Compass divides whisky into four flavor areas. The dot indicates where this bottle stands.
Smoky & PowerfulFor moments that should linger
Peat smoke. Dried herbs. A touch of citrus.
Intense peat smoke. Pepper. Powerful at cask strength, with an undertone of vanilla.
Long. Smoky. Spicy. Warming.
For lovers of bold, smoky cask strength whisky with a robust, warming finish.
English whisky with peat smoke and at cask strength: at a tasting this bottle never fails to cause surprised faces, and I mean that in a good way. I pour it in small sips, with a pipette of water within reach. It is for the smoke lover who thinks only Islay can do this.
That the whisky was bottled undiluted at cask strength, with no water added. The ABV therefore varies from batch to batch; the exact figure is on the label. Taste a small sip neat first, then add water drop by drop until the smoke and spice are in balance.
Triple distillation usually produces a light, clean spirit, while peated whisky is all about power. This Red Range combines the two: a refined, triple-distilled base with a hefty layer of peat smoke, matured in ex-bourbon casks. In Scotland, single malt is normally distilled twice.
At St. George's Distillery in Norfolk, home of The English Whisky Co. When it started in 2006, it was the first English whisky distillery in more than a hundred years. Today it makes both unpeated and peated single malts, such as this Red Range.
