Who is it for?

For anyone looking for an unusual story: a peated Lowland malt, quite different in style from the rest of the Kingsbarns range.

Food pairing

  • Smoked mackerel
  • Honey cake
  • Semi-mature farmhouse cheese

Why I chose this

A peated whisky from the Lowlands is something hardly anyone expects, and that is exactly why I wanted Coaltown in our range. The name recalls Fife's coal-mining history; the smoke is gentle and carried by honey and vanilla. A lovely step for anyone who wants to discover smoke without heading straight to Islay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Coaltown a good first smoky whisky?

Yes, it is an approachable introduction to peat. The smoke is light and gentle, balanced by honey, vanilla and citrus from the ex-bourbon casks. The finish is medium-long and sweet yet drying. If you later want more smoke, you can move on to more heavily peated whiskies in our Smoky & Powerful quadrant.

How does Coaltown differ from the other Kingsbarns whiskies?

Coaltown is peated, whereas Kingsbarns is normally known for light, floral and fruity whisky. Balcomie and the Distillery Reserve are unpeated and fruitier. Coaltown adds light smoke, honey and spice, which places it in a different quadrant of the Flavour Compass. A peated Lowland malt is a rarity in itself, too.

What food pairs with Kingsbarns Coaltown?

Smoked mackerel is an obvious match: the smoke in the fish and the whisky reinforce each other. Mature farmhouse cheese works well, as its salty creaminess contrasts with the sweet, drying finish. For a sweet finale, honey cake picks up the honey notes in the whisky. Enjoy it neat or with a drop of water.
