For anyone looking for a fruity, approachable Lowland malt with a strong coastal story (golf, beach, the terroir of Fife).
Balcomie is named after the beach next to the distillery, and that is exactly how it feels: sunny and relaxed. I admire how Kingsbarns uses oloroso casks without making the whisky heavy; you taste sultanas and orange peel, yet it stays light. A bottle for a long summer evening.
No, Balcomie sits in our Smooth & Fruity quadrant. The American oak ex-oloroso casks bring treacle, sultanas and fruit loaf with cinnamon, but the Kingsbarns Lowland spirit keeps everything fresh. On the palate, sweet pineapple and orange peel take the lead, with a finish of dried apricot and roasted hazelnut.
Balcomie is the beach next to the Kingsbarns distillery, on the Fife coast near the golf courses of St Andrews. The name therefore refers to the place where the whisky is made. Balcomie is Kingsbarns' signature bottling: fully matured in ex-oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 46% ABV, without chill filtration or colouring.
Yes, especially for someone who enjoys fruity, approachable whisky. Its sherried yet light profile appeals to many people, and the coastal story of Fife makes it a lovely present. If you do not know the recipient's taste exactly, a fruity whisky like this one is a safe choice.
