The Distillery Reserve 2021 is a limited annual release at cask strength, matured in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and STR wine casks — a more intense, undiluted side of Kingsbarns' floral Lowland style.
Our Flavor Compass divides whisky into four flavor areas. The dot indicates where this bottle stands.

Ripe apple. Honey. Vanilla and oak.
Concentrated fruit. Spicy oak. The power of cask strength.
Long. Warming. Fruity.
The Distillery Reserve 2021 is Kingsbarns with the brakes off: 61.8% ABV and undiluted. Even so, the floral Lowland character holds its own, with ripe apple and honey, enriched by the wine casks. I recommend it to anyone who already enjoys Balcomie and wants to discover what the same distillery has to say at cask strength.
STR stands for shaved, toasted and re-charred: red wine barriques whose inner surface has been shaved, toasted and charred again. This releases fresh wood aromas once more. In the Distillery Reserve 2021, 40% of the whisky matured in first-fill STR barriques and 60% in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, giving concentrated fruit and spicy oak.
With water, in small steps. First take a small sip neat to get to know its intensity. Then add a teaspoon of water and taste again; ripe apple, honey and vanilla often come through better. Many enthusiasts dilute a whisky of this strength to around 45 to 50%, but your own taste is the guide.
No, 2021 is the release year of this limited annual edition. There is no age statement on the bottle. Kingsbarns releases the Distillery Reserve as an annual edition, at cask strength and in limited quantities. This 2021 edition was bottled at 61.8% ABV, without chill filtration or colouring.
