Penderyn

Penderyn whisky comes from Wales, where the distillery ran its first spirit in 2000 after more than a century without Welsh whisky. At the heart of Penderyn is the copper Faraday still, designed by Dr David Faraday, which produces an exceptionally smooth and fruity spirit. This collection includes the Dragon Range, the Gold Range, the 12 year old and an exclusive single cask.

More about [title]

The Dragon Range with Legend and Celt is approachable and good value; the Gold Range shows a different cask in every bottle, from Madeira and Sherrywood to Rich Oak and Peated. The Penderyn B&T 30-jarig jubileum Ruby Port Cask is a single cask selected especially for the importer Bresser & Timmer.

What is the difference between the Penderyn Gold Range and Dragon Range?

The Dragon Range is Penderyn's approachable everyday range, while the Gold Range is all about different cask finishes. In this collection, Legend and Celt are the Dragon bottles: light and fruity, with Celt adding gentle smoke. From the Gold Range you can choose Madeira, Sherrywood, Rich Oak or Peated, each with its own cask influence. To get to know Penderyn, start with Legend or Madeira and explore from there.

Why does Penderyn mature so much whisky in Madeira casks?

Because the Madeira finish is Penderyn's signature. The whisky first matures in ex-bourbon barrels and is then finished in casks that held Madeira wine. This brings ripe and tropical fruit, vanilla and a fresh sweetness that suit the light spirit from the Faraday still. You can taste this style in the Gold Range Madeira and in the Penderyn 12 YO, which is also finished in Madeira casks.

How smoky are the peated Penderyn whiskies?

Light to medium: the smoke stays gentle and is balanced by fruity sweetness. The Dragon Range Celt is the mildest, while the Gold Range Peated has more smoke and depth. According to Penderyn, the Peated balances gentle smoke with the house's fruity sweetness. They are nothing like the heavy Islay style; think rather of a smoky edge around ripe fruit, ideal if you are trying smoke for the first time.

What does Single Malt Welsh Whisky on the label mean?

It is a protected name. Single Malt Welsh Whisky holds Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, and according to Penderyn it is the first Welsh spirit to do so. It guarantees that the whisky is made in Wales to a defined standard and that the name cannot be imitated. Penderyn led the application together with the Welsh distilleries In the Welsh Wind, Da Mhile and Coles.

Can you visit the Penderyn distillery?

Yes, Penderyn has three sites in Wales where you can look around and taste. The original distillery has stood in the village of Penderyn on the edge of the Brecon Beacons since 2000. Since 2021 there has been a distillery in Llandudno in North Wales, and since 2023 one in the historic Hafod Copperworks in Swansea. Tours with tastings can be booked via the Penderyn website.
