Penderyn

Penderyn Dragon Range Celt Peated

Celt is the peated member of Penderyn's Dragon Range — named after the Celtic roots of Wales. An unusual combination: the soft, fruity Penderyn signature with a layer of gentle smoke.

Why I chose this

I like to use the Celt as a stepping stone to smoke. It is still recognisably Penderyn, soft and fruity, but with a layer of smoke that never shouts. I pour it for people who are a little wary of Islay yet remain curious.

Frequently Asked Questions

How smoky is the Penderyn Celt?

Gently smoky. The smoke comes from a finish in casks that previously held peated whisky, laying a light veil of smoke over honey, citrus and vanilla. At 41% ABV and with a sweet, drying finish, it is an approachable introduction to smoky whisky.

What are ex-peated quarter casks?

Smaller casks that previously held peated whisky. Because whisky in a small cask has relatively more contact with the wood, it picks up the smoky notes left in the wood fairly quickly. For the Celt, this happens after maturation in ex-bourbon casks.

What is the difference between the Celt and the Gold Range Peated?

The Celt from the Dragon Range is the gentlest smoky Penderyn: 41% ABV with a mild layer of smoke. The Gold Range Peated is bottled at 46% ABV and has more smoke and depth, with Penderyn's tropical sweetness in the background. Start with the Celt and move on when you want more smoke.
