For anyone looking for an approachable, floral Speyside malt in a pure, unfiltered single cask edition.
Many people know Glen Moray as a friendly, affordable Speyside malt. This Cadenhead single cask shows how much finesse that spirit has when it is left to mature undisturbed in a single bourbon cask for sixteen years. I pour it on a Sunday afternoon, with a jug of water within reach.
Start with a few drops and taste after each addition. This single cask was bottled undiluted, so its strength is higher than a standard bottling; the exact ABV varies by cask and is shown on the label. A little water opens up the green apple, honey and blossom and softens the alcohol.
This bottle comes from a single ex-bourbon cask from 2007, not vatted with other casks. Cadenhead bottled it at cask strength, without chill filtration or colouring. A standard distillery bottling is a mix of many casks. Here you taste the spirit pure and unadulterated, with the individuality of that one cask.
In terms of flavour, yes: green apple, vanilla and a fresh, elegant finish are very approachable. Only the cask strength needs a little care. If you are just starting out, it is best enjoyed with some water. That way you also learn how a whisky changes as you dilute it.
