Cadenhead

Cadenhead Longrow 23 YO 2002

Founded in 1842, Cadenhead is Scotland's oldest independent whisky bottler and, like Springbank, is owned by the family firm J&A Mitchell. Longrow is Springbank's heavily peated sister whisky, distilled in Campbeltown — this 23-year-old from Cadenhead's Original Collection, matured in oloroso sherry casks, is a rare, mature expression of that smoky character.

Why I chose this

You rarely come across a 23-year-old Longrow. The peat smoke has not disappeared over all those years, but it has matured, wrapped in leather, sea salt and dark fruit. I set this bottle aside for the connoisseur who knows what Campbeltown can do in the glass.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Longrow and Springbank?

Both are distilled at Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown, but to a different recipe. Longrow is the heavily peated version: the malt is dried entirely over peat smoke and the whisky is distilled twice. Springbank itself is much more lightly peated. This 23-year-old shows how that heavy smoke becomes riper and more complex over the years.

Should you let this old Longrow breathe in the glass?

Yes, give it a few minutes. After 23 years of maturation there are many layers beneath the peat smoke, such as leather, oily notes and dark fruit. Pour it into a tulip glass, let it rest for five to ten minutes and taste in small sips. At 43.7% ABV, water is usually unnecessary.

Is this Longrow 23 YO a bottle to keep?

It can be, if you store it well. A sealed bottle hardly changes as long as it stands upright, in the dark and at a constant temperature. A Longrow of this age, bottled by Cadenhead, Scotland's oldest independent bottler, is rare. If you would rather drink it, it is already mature and complex now.
