Kingsbarns New Make Spirit

Kingsbarns, on the Fife coast next to the golf courses of St Andrews, is one of the youngest Lowland distilleries in Scotland. This New Make Spirit is the unaged, crystal-clear foundation of their whisky — a unique chance to taste what happens before the cask.

Who is it for?

For the curious whisky lover who wants to taste how whisky begins, before the cask does its work.

Food pairing

  • Fresh fruit
  • Lightly salted nuts
  • As a learning experience alongside a matured Kingsbarns

Why I chose this

This bottle is for the curious. New make is whisky before the cask has done anything to it: clear, grainy, with pear and flowers. I like to set it next to a Balcomie, so you can taste in one flight what years of maturation mean.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Kingsbarns New Make Spirit be called whisky?

No, not officially. In Scotland and the EU, a spirit must mature in wooden casks for at least three years before it may be called whisky. This Kingsbarns New Make is unaged and crystal clear, bottled without cask maturation at 63.5% ABV. It is the base from which Kingsbarns whisky is made, which is exactly why it is so instructive to taste.

How do you best taste New Make Spirit?

In small measures and with water. At 63.5% ABV it is very powerful neat; an equal amount of water makes the aromas of fresh grain, pear and flowers much clearer. Ideally, taste it alongside a matured Kingsbarns such as Balcomie. That way you discover which flavours come from the spirit and which the cask adds.

Does New Make Spirit still change in the bottle?

No, just like whisky, new make does not continue to mature in glass. The flavour stays as it was bottled: clear, grainy and fresh. Store the bottle upright, in the dark and tightly closed. Thanks to its high strength, it keeps for a long time once opened, although the fresh aromas slowly fade if the bottle stays half empty for long.
