The social distillery: the story of Isle of Harris Distillery
On Harris, an island in the Outer Hebrides where the population has been shrinking for decades, the first-ever legal distillery opened in 2015. Not to maximize profits, but to keep people on the island. This is the story of Isle of Harris Distillery, the "social distillery".

A distillery to save an island
Anderson Bakewell, a British-American musicologist with ties to the region, saw how the population of Harris shrank year after year as young people moved away for work. His answer was not a tourist attraction, but a real employer: a distillery that channels profits back to the local community, trains staff, and offers summer jobs to students. When the doors opened in October 2015, it was the very first legal distillery Harris had ever known.
Waiting for whisky, financed by gin
Whisky takes years to mature, and a new distillery has no income during that time. Isle of Harris solved this with its own gin, distilled with sugar kelp harvested locally off the coast — a botanical not used anywhere else in this way. The gin funded the waiting period until the whisky was ready, and the gin bottle even won a Gold Award for design at the World Gin Awards in 2021.
The Hearach: eight years of waiting, sold out within hours
In September 2023, the moment finally arrived: The Hearach, Harris's very first single malt, hit the market. The name is Gaelic for "a resident of Harris" — a nod to the whole idea behind the distillery. The interest was enormous: the online stock of the first batches sold out within 4.5 hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does "social distillery" mean?
Isle of Harris Distillery sees itself not only as a beverage producer, but as a driving force for the local community: profits go back partly to employment, education, and the island itself, in a region where the population has been shrinking for years.
Why did Isle of Harris release a gin first and only later whisky?
Whisky must mature for years before it can be sold. The gin, with sugar kelp as its characteristic botanical, provided income during the years when the distillery was not yet allowed to sell a single drop of whisky.
What does the name "The Hearach" mean?
"Hearach" is Gaelic for a resident of Harris — the same community that the distillery wants to support with its existence.
How popular was the first bottling of The Hearach?
Very popular: the online stock of the very first release in September 2023 sold out within 4.5 hours.
