Whisky stones
Whisky stones chill your whisky without adding meltwater, so the flavour is not watered down. This collection includes engraved sets of six stones from Just Slate Company in Scotland and a set of large granite stones from Bar Originale. They are ideal if you like your dram a little cooler, and with motifs such as the red deer, the pheasant or the Highland cow they also make a personal gift.

The engraved stones from Just Slate Company measure 2 x 2 x 2 cm and come with a velvet storage pouch in a gift box. The granite stones from Bar Originale are slightly larger at 2.5 cm and therefore hold their chill a little longer. You will often find the same motif on our coasters, which is handy if you are looking for a matching gift. If you want to chill your whisky properly, also take a look at our ice moulds for large, slow-melting ice spheres.
Do whisky stones chill as well as ice cubes?
No, whisky stones chill less than ice, but they do not dilute your whisky. Ice mainly absorbs heat by melting, and that very meltwater waters down your glass. Stones from the freezer lower the temperature by a few degrees and keep your whisky fresh for a while. They suit anyone who wants their dram slightly cooler without the flavour becoming thinner.
How long should whisky stones stay in the freezer?
Put whisky stones in the freezer for at least 5 to 6 hours before use; that is what Just Slate Company advises for its engraved sets. The easiest approach is to rinse them after use, let them dry and put them straight back in the freezer in their pouch. That way they are always cold when you fancy a dram, and they will not pick up smells from other food in the freezer.
How many whisky stones should you put in a glass?
Two to three whisky stones per glass is enough for a normal measure. Ideally use them in a tumbler with a wide, sturdy base and let the stones slide in gently rather than dropping them, to avoid chips and scratches in the glass. They fit less well in a narrow tulip glass; in that glass you usually prefer to drink whisky neat at room temperature.
How do you clean whisky stones?
Rinse whisky stones with warm water after use and let them dry thoroughly before they go back in the freezer. Wash the engraved stones from Just Slate Company by hand. Granite, as used for the Bar Originale stones, is non-porous and therefore does not absorb smells or flavours. Avoid strong cleaning products, as you would taste any residue in your next glass.
Are whisky stones suitable for every whisky?
Whisky stones suit whisky you want to drink relaxed and a little cooler, such as on a warm summer evening. Cold does dampen the aromas, though. If you want to nose and taste a complex single malt at length, take a first sip at room temperature and only add the stones afterwards. That way you discover for yourself what cold does to a whisky from each quadrant of the M4W Flavour Compass.
