Ice moulds

Ice moulds for whisky make large ice cubes and spheres that melt more slowly than ordinary ice, so your dram stays cool without quickly becoming diluted. This collection features flexible silicone moulds for everyday use and professional Crystal Clear moulds that make crystal-clear, bubble-free ice. Choose from spheres, cubes, diamonds and even skulls, for whisky on the rocks and for cocktails such as an Old Fashioned.

More about [title]

The silicone moulds make 4 or 4.5 cm spheres, 4.5 cm square cubes or diamonds, and are quick to fill and easy to clean. The Crystal Clear moulds use directional freezing and produce spheres of up to 6 cm and crystal-clear cubes, diamonds and skulls. If you would rather have no meltwater in your glass at all, take a look at the whisky stones.

How does a Crystal Clear ice mould work?

A Crystal Clear ice mould makes water freeze from the top down, pushing air and minerals to the bottom instead of trapping them in the ice. The mould is insulated at the sides, so the ice grows in one direction only. After 18 to 30 hours in the freezer you have crystal-clear ice; a small white patch at the bottom is normal.

Why does a large ice sphere melt more slowly than ordinary ice cubes?

A large ice sphere has less surface area relative to its volume, and ice melts through the surface that touches the whisky. Of all shapes, a sphere has the smallest surface per volume. As a result, a 6 cm ice sphere chills your glass evenly while melting much more slowly than a handful of small cubes. That keeps your whisky full of flavour for longer.

Why does ice from the freezer turn cloudy?

Ice turns cloudy because water in an ordinary mould freezes from the outside in and traps air and minerals in the centre. You see those bubbles as a white, matt core. Filtered water and slow freezing help a little, but the direction of freezing is the main factor. That is why Crystal Clear moulds do make clear ice, while ordinary silicone moulds usually do not quite manage it.

Do Crystal Clear ice moulds fit in every freezer?

Not always: the larger Crystal Clear ice moulds are around 20 cm tall and do not fit in a standard freezer drawer. So measure the height of your freezer or drawer beforehand. Place the mould level and open the freezer door as little as possible while it freezes. The silicone ice moulds are much flatter and fit almost anywhere, including a small freezer compartment.

Which ice mould suits which whisky glass?

An ice sphere or cube of 5.5 to 6 cm fits best in a wide tumbler, while smaller spheres of 4 to 4.5 cm also fit in a narrower glass. Measure the inside diameter of your glass so the ice does not get stuck. In a tulip-shaped tasting glass you usually drink whisky without ice, because that is where you want to nose the aromas.
