W.D. O'Connell Whiskey Merchants is an independent Irish bottler, founded in 2019 by Daithí O'Connell in County Waterford. This 10-year-old Single Grain was distilled at Cooley Distillery and first matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks before being finished in ex-rye whiskey casks — a combination that adds an extra spicy layer to the naturally soft, sweet grain character.
Our Flavor Compass divides whisky into four flavor areas. The dot indicates where this bottle stands.

Medium length, warm and gently spiced.
For anyone who wants to discover single grain whiskey through an approachable, sweet dram with just that little bit of extra spice.
Lovely with vanilla ice cream, apple pie or a light cheese board.
Single grain is often underrated, and this ten-year-old from W.D. O'Connell shows why that is a pity. Soft and sweet, with just enough spice from the rye casks to keep it interesting. I like to pour it with vanilla ice cream or apple pie, as a light end to a dinner.
Whiskey from a single distillery that is made not only from malted barley but also from other grains, and is usually distilled in a column still. That produces a soft, sweet style. This ten-year-old comes from the Cooley Distillery in County Louth.
An extra layer of spice. The whiskey first matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, which give vanilla and honey, and was then finished in casks that previously held rye whiskey. These bring a touch of rye spice without disturbing the full, rounded base.
