Laphroaig needs no introduction for lovers of intensely smoky whisky: the Islay distillery is known for its medicinal, almost iodine-like smoky character, thanks in part to malt from its own floor maltings and peat from its own peat beds. This 18-year-old single cask comes from Duncan Taylor's Premium range — one of the top ranges of this independent bottler. The cask was bottled unfiltered, without added colouring, at cask strength.
Our Flavor Compass divides whisky into four flavor areas. The dot indicates where this bottle stands.
Smoky & PowerfulFor moments that should linger
Long, smoky and briny, with a lingering peaty warmth.
For the seasoned Islay enthusiast in search of a rare, older single cask Laphroaig with all the smoky intensity that made the name famous.
Excellent with smoked salmon, oysters or a robust blue cheese.
I know Laphroaig as rugged and medicinal, but eighteen years in a single cask have turned it into something deeper. The iodine and peat are still there in abundance, just calmer and more complex, with dried fruit underneath. I save this bottle for Islay lovers who think they have tasted it all.
Eighteen years of maturation have tempered Laphroaig's rugged youthfulness. The medicinal peat smoke and iodine are still very much present, but the whole is deeper and more complex, with dried fruit, warm spice and a gentle sweetness. Our range also includes a younger Laphroaig from Living Souls (11 years old) to taste alongside it.
The Premium range is one of the top ranges from independent bottler Duncan Taylor, featuring carefully selected casks. In this case, it is a single cask Laphroaig from 2004. The cask was bottled at cask strength, without chill filtration or added colouring, so you taste the whisky just as it came out of the cask.
In small measures and with patience. Pour a little into a tulip glass, nose it carefully and take a small sip neat. Then add a few drops of water: the smoke softens and the dried fruit and briny notes come forward. The exact ABV is shown on the label. We advise against ice, as it mutes the complexity.
