Thy

Thy Caramel Malt

This limited, 4-year-old release from Thy Whisky was distilled from a malt mix of 60% pale malt, 30% caramel malt and 10% beechwood-smoked malt, then matured in a combination of PX and Oloroso sherry casks and bourbon casks. The caramel malt naturally gives this whisky a rich, full sweetness even before the sherry maturation works its magic.

Why I chose this

That a four-year-old whisky can taste this full and rich still surprises me. The secret lies in the caramel malt, and the sherry casks complete the story. I save it for lovers of sherry-driven whisky who are curious to see what Denmark does with the style.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is caramel malt?

Barley that is heated during malting so that some of its sugars caramelise, a technique best known from brewing. In this Thy Caramel Malt, 30% of the malt bill is caramel malt, complemented by pale and beech-smoked malt. That gives a full sweetness even before maturation.

Isn't four years very young for whisky?

No, the legal minimum age is three years, and age is only one factor. Active PX and oloroso sherry casks, bourbon casks, caramel malt and a strength of 54.5% ABV deliver a full, rich flavour here. It is also a limited release from a small farm distillery.

Should you add water to the Thy Caramel Malt?

I would recommend it, but step by step. Taste a small sip neat first to feel the strength of 54.5% ABV, then add water drop by drop. The dried fruit, cocoa and black tea often come through more clearly as a result.
